NATIVE HAWAIIAN DESIGN

The front of the Kapa Hex pays tribute to the indigenous peoples of Hawaiʻi that arrived to the islands from their ancestral homeland of Kahiki as early as 300A.D. The Kapa Hex features many cultural motifs and traditional concepts.

The back design consists of kapa prints in a hexagonal shape with the names of the eight islands of Hawaiʻi – Hawaiʻi, Maui, Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi, Oʻahu, Kauaʻi and Niʻihau. Kapa is the traditional form of cloth made from the bark of the wauke (paper mulberry tree). With this cloth, Hawaiian peoples were able to make various types of clothing for both men and women.

The Kapa Hex design also features various kāpala (stamps fashioned out of native bamboo) styles. Using kāpala, Hawaiians would decorate the kapa with various designs. The kāpala on the Kapa Hex design (from left to right) include: the nihoniho (shark teeth), koʻeau (undulating earthworm), ulana (weave), maka ihe (eye of the spear), kanaka (people) and kualapa (ridge).

Traditionally, each of the kāpala patterns would have personal meaning for the maker and / or the wearer. With this shirt, our designers wanted to intentionally highlight the patterns forward in a modern way.

Wear this shirt to show your love for traditional Hawaiian culture or if you have a personal interest in the kāpala represented in the design.

Sustainability

We've partnered with some stellar organizations who are taking garment printing into the 21st century with DTG (direct-to-garment) printing technology. This means, everything at Maoli is made to order and we don’t have a warehouse full of clothes lying around. This reduces the clothing waste in our business to nearly zero.

Our eco-friendly water-based inks provide unlimited color combinations and make detailed prints pop without reducing their vibrancy in the wash. Reducing toxicity in the environment is one of our top priorities.

Whenever possible, we also use organic, recycled, or sustainable fabrics to manufacture our apparel. We aim to make our products good for your body and for the ʻāina (land).

We encourage our customers and our community to demand more from us when it comes to sustainability. Have an idea? Please don’t hesitate to reach out!
