NATIVE HAWAIIAN DESIGN

The Mākau (fishhook) design pays respect to the renowned demigod, Maui, and his magical fishhook, Mānaiakalani. There is a traditional story of Maui and his older brothers setting out on a canoe to go fishing. As Maui fished with his magical fish hook, Mānaiakalani, he told his brothers that if he should hook something, to paddle as fast as they could to the shore and to never look back.

Suddenly, Maui hooked a massive creature. His brothers, listening to Maui’s advice, quickly paddled to shore as Maui reeled the creature in. However, his brothers began to lose strength and grew curious to see what was putting up such a big fight! Ignoring Maui’s request, his brothers turned their heads to try and see the creature Maui was pulling in. Instead of a creature, they saw the pae ʻāina ʻo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian archipelago) rising out of the ocean. But, as soon as they looked at what Maui had caught, the magic was broken and Maui’s line snapped.

Mānaiakalani is also a constellation used by Hawaiian navigators to wayfind across the Pacific Ocean.

Wear this shirt to carry the story of Maui, his magical fish hook Mānaiakalani, and the birth of the Hawaiian islands.

Sustainability

We've partnered with some stellar organizations who are taking garment printing into the 21st century with DTG (direct-to-garment) printing technology. This means, everything at Maoli is made to order and we don’t have a warehouse full of clothes lying around. This reduces the clothing waste in our business to nearly zero.

Our eco-friendly water-based inks provide unlimited color combinations and make detailed prints pop without reducing their vibrancy in the wash. Reducing toxicity in the environment is one of our top priorities.

Whenever possible, we also use organic, recycled, or sustainable fabrics to manufacture our apparel. We aim to make our products good for your body and for the ʻāina (land).

We encourage our customers and our community to demand more from us when it comes to sustainability. Have an idea? Please don’t hesitate to reach out!
