Kulāiwi Crew Sweatshirt

This comfortable, crew neck sweatshirt features original, custom artwork by Maoli designers. Air-jet spun yarn and quarter-turned fabric reduces pilling and gives this sweatshirt a soft, comfortable feel. The center chest and left arm designs are printed using soft hand ink.

NATIVE HAWAIIAN DESIGN

The Kulāiwi design is of the pae ʻāina (archipelago) of Hawaiʻi. Kulāiwi translates in English to “Homeland” and is a personally-important waypoint for any Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian). 

The design also includes the official Hawaiian flag superimposed over the islands. Upon close inspection, the flag is flipped upside down. This kaona (hidden meaning) represents the struggle of the present-day Kanaka Maoli in trying to preserve and perpetuate what is so near and dear to their hearts. The flag still shows eight bands of alternating red, white and blue colors, each band representing a Hawaiian island. 

The design also features our logo, which include the three mauna (mountain) pattern triangles representing the three hanauna (generations) guiding native peoples of today – past, present and future.
