NATIVE HAWAIIAN DESIGN
Hiʻiaka is a well renowned goddess of Hawaiian mythology, the patron goddess of Hawaiʻi, hula (Hawaiian dance), oli (chants), sorcery and medicine. She is also the youngest sister of Pele, the powerful goddess of volcanoes and fire.
Hiʻiaka is most famous for her epic journey across the Hawaiian islands to fetch Pele's lover, Lohiʻau. She traveled from Hawaiʻi island to Kauaʻi, solving a variety of challenges and bravely battling many powerful mythological creatures (kupua) along the way. Her persona and prowess make her a perfect embodiment of Mana Wahine (woman power) and a legendary hero.
The silhouette on the back of the shirt illustrates the three supernatural gifts she was granted to complete her epic quest.
- The inner swirl represents ʻĀwihikalani (the heavenly leer) or the ability to foresee the future, communicate with spirits and wield supernatural knowledge.
