NATIVE HAWAIIAN DESIGN

“Do U Even Kuʻi?” is our call to action. In the past, Native Hawaiians consumed up to 4.5 million pounds of kalo (taro) every day mostly as poi. Poi is a vitamin-rich, easily digestible, probiotic starch. In a world filled with over processed foods, we are on a mission to bring poi back to the table!

To prepare poi, Hawaiians would steam the kalo, and hand-pound it using a pōhaku kuʻi ʻai (poi pounding rock). Hand pounding poi is nothing less of an art form, and our call to action is to revive this practice for our future generations. We need more poi pounders who can help feed our community this healthy, traditional diet.

At Maoli, we crafted this design for those who are interested in revitalizing the traditional practice of hand pounding kalo into poi.

Go ahead, ask your friends, let’s bring it back! I mean, “Do U Even Kuʻi?”

Sustainability

We've partnered with some stellar organizations who are taking garment printing into the 21st century with DTG (direct-to-garment) printing technology. This means, everything at Maoli is made to order and we don’t have a warehouse full of clothes lying around. This reduces the clothing waste in our business to nearly zero.

Our eco-friendly water-based inks provide unlimited color combinations and make detailed prints pop without reducing their vibrancy in the wash. Reducing toxicity in the environment is one of our top priorities.

Whenever possible, we also use organic, recycled, or sustainable fabrics to manufacture our apparel. We aim to make our products good for your body and for the ʻāina (land).

We encourage our customers and our community to demand more from us when it comes to sustainability. Have an idea? Please don’t hesitate to reach out!
