There are so many people that I meet nowadays who are interested in the Maoli logo. Some have seen it used somewhere else, and are curious about what it means in a Hawaiian context, and some who are more familiar with Hawaiian culture know to still ask to understand the story behind the design. In this article, we will go over the cultural traditions and meaning behind our logo.

Honoring Kanaka Maoli Through Local Island Clothing

At Maoli, we believe that a shirt can carry more than just a design—it can carry meaning, identity, and intention. When you know, you know. Our clothing and symbols often serve as powerful sources of confidence for those who wear them. Whether walking through town or standing for something greater, our community wears Maoli as an extension of who they are.

That’s why our logo isn’t just an aesthetic choice. It’s a cultural marker—one that reflects who we are, where we come from, and the values we uphold as a Native Hawaiian-owned brand. As one of the few Hawaiian clothing brands rooted in ancestral knowledge, Maoli represents more than just fashion—it represents kanaka maoli pride and purpose.

If you wear our local island clothing here in Hawaiʻi, chances are, someone’s going to notice. The symbols in the Maoli logo are deeply tied to Native Hawaiian identity, generational knowledge, and our shared kuleana (responsibility) to protect and perpetuate culture.

And if you're wearing Maoli beyond Hawaiʻi, it’s natural for people to be curious about the symbol on your shirt or hat. That curiosity is an opportunity to share part of our story. That’s why we created this guide—to ensure that whether you're a local, a cultural ally, or someone who simply respects the message, you can confidently explain the meaning behind the Maoli logo.

Three Mauna, Three Generations: A Kanaka Maoli Perspective

Our logo features three stacked mauna (mountain) motifs—each a triangle symbolizing strength and resilience. The Hawaiian islands are host to a wide array of diverse and impressive mountain ranges, which even serve as unique identifiers for each of the eight islands.

Mauna or mountain Hawaiian design

When designing the Maoli logo, we turned to the mauna as role models for our business in being kūpaʻa (steadfast) and holu (resilient). Envisioning Maoli in the future, we wanted to embody the lessons and teachings of the mauna in every way we could

But together, the three mountains carry a much deeper message.

Hanauna or generations Hawaiian design

The trio represents the Hawaiian concept of hanauna, or generations:

  • Ka wā i hala – The past
  • Ka wā ʻānō – The present
  • Ka wā mahope – The future

The past generation Maoli logo design

In Hawaiian culture, honoring those who came before us is essential. The past (ka wā i hala) provides the ʻike (knowledge) that guides us today. Whether it’s lessons from elders or signs from ancestral guardians (ʻaumākua), our connection to the past is sacred.

The future generation Maoli logo design

The future (ka wā mahope) is equally vital. Native Hawaiians have always been visionary, making choices today that would allow the next generations to thrive. That same thinking is built into our business model at Maoli—to craft modern Hawaiian t-shirts for men and women that inspire pride and purpose for generations to come.

The present generation Maoli logo design

And then there’s the present (ka wā ʻānō)—the bridge between past and future. It’s where we carry the torch, steward the land, and keep culture alive through conscious action. When you wear a Maoli Hawai‘i t-shirt, you're representing more than just a brand. You’re representing an indigenous legacy.

The three generations help to give Maoli as a business the perspective of why we do the work we do. We recognize that our mission to empower Native Hawaiian people and cultural allies through modern apparel that positively showcases and embraces indigenous identity is a multi-generation effort. We draw upon the wisdom of our forefathers and foremothers to guide us to make this world a better place for future generations. To us, incorporating this knowledge into a symbol we could refer to across our business was the perfect way to ensure this perspective remained at the core of everything we did. With this, the Maoli logo was born.

Cultural Art That Inspires Modern Hawaiian Shirts

This traditional pattern has been seen throughout Hawaiian attire and cultural artwork for centuries, from kākau (tattoos) to kapa prints and ulana (weaving).

Before it became our logo, this traditional triangular design pattern had long existed in traditional Native Hawaiian artistry. It’s seen in:

  • Kākau (tattooing), where bone-carved tools were used to imprint sacred symbols and familial designs on the skin
  • Ulana (weaving), where the leaves of the hala or pandannus tree were dried and then woven together in intricate patterns to produce mats, baskets and other goods.
  • Kapa (barkcloth) design, where the inner bark fibers of the wauke or paper mulberry were pounded into a cloth, which was then printed with various designs

These designs weren’t for decoration. They carried kaona (hidden meaning), lineage, and identity. At Maoli, we view our work as a modern extension of these cultural practices. That’s what makes us different from mainstream Hawaii clothing brands—we’re not designing for trends. We’re designing for our people.

How the Maoli Logo Reflects Our Values

Every time we look at our logo, we’re reminded of our mission: to empower kanaka maoli and cultural allies through meaningful, respectful design. We’ve embedded three guiding values into everything we do:

  • Hōʻihi (Respect): We strive for cultural accuracy and integrity in every piece of apparel, so wearers can showcase Hawaiian identity with pride.
  • Hoʻomau (Perpetuate): We pass on stories and ʻike through design, helping preserve our culture for generations.
  • Hoʻoulu (Grow): We seek to expand awareness of Hawaiian culture through connection—whether you're on-island or thousands of miles away.

These values show up in every one of our Hawaiian t-shirts, whether you’re shopping online or finding us through Hawai‘i surf shops online or local clothing stores in Hawai‘i.

Wearing a Symbol with Intention and Aloha

The Maoli logo isn’t about branding—it’s about belonging. It’s a reminder of our kuleana to the land, our kūpuna, and our keiki. It’s for those who walk with intention, wear their pride on their chest, and carry the stories of Hawaiʻi into the future.

As one of the rising Hawaiian clothing brands, Maoli continues to stand out by staying grounded in purpose. When you wear a Maoli Hawaii T-shirt, you're wearing resilience, vision, and respect.

E ola e nā mamo o ka pae ʻāina ʻo Hawaiʻi.

Long live the descendants of the Hawaiian islands.
