NATIVE HAWAIIAN DESIGN

The Hāloa design captures the miracle of life that emerged from an otherwise sad tale. Two gods, Wākea of the sky and Hoʻohōkūkalani of the stars, had a child together and his name was Hāloa (long, eternal breath). Sadly, he was stillborn, and so his parents wrapped him in kapa (cloth) and buried him in the ʻāina (land).

The design honors what happened next. Sprouting out of the buried baby is the first kalo plant and the eldest brother of all Native Hawaiians, Hāloanakalaukapalili (long stalk of the fluttering leaves). When Wākea and Hoʻohōkūkalani had a second child they also named him Hāloa, and he was the first kanaka maoli (Native Hawaiian) to walk the earth.

Hāloa may be the first kanaka maoli (Native Hawaiian), but most importantly he is the younger brother to the kalo plant Hāloanakalaukapalili (long stalk of the fluttering leaves). This genealogy directly ties Native Hawaiians to this sacred plant and the land that is home to their eldest brother.

Wear this design to honor the importance of families, indigenous people's connection to their native land, and keeping our genealogy alive.

Sustainability

We've partnered with some stellar organizations who are taking garment printing into the 21st century with DTG (direct-to-garment) printing technology. This means, everything at Maoli is made to order and we don’t have a warehouse full of clothes lying around. This reduces the clothing waste in our business to nearly zero.

Our eco-friendly water-based inks provide unlimited color combinations and make detailed prints pop without reducing their vibrancy in the wash. Reducing toxicity in the environment is one of our top priorities.

Whenever possible, we also use organic, recycled, or sustainable fabrics to manufacture our apparel. We aim to make our products good for your body and for the ʻāina (land).

We encourage our customers and our community to demand more from us when it comes to sustainability. Have an idea? Please don’t hesitate to reach out!
